About Tonya Crombie, Ph.D.

Who am I? Gosh, how does one answer this question?? Why don’t we start here? Anyone who knows me well knows I love bullet points and I believe three really is a magic number, so:

  • I’m a wife, a mother, a coach, a teacher, and an organizational psychologist,
  • I am a small town girl who loves living in and traveling to big cities, and,
  • I love pop music and can’t resist throwing out musical references when they fit and sometimes even when they don’t.

Uh oh... I couldn’t fit it all into three points. And I left out the most important thing:

I LOVE BEING A COACH!

My super-power is the ability to see through the muck to what’s really going on. And I’m brave enough to say whatever will help my clients achieve great things.

About - Tonya Crombie

What, you're still reading this?? Well, if you really want more…. Here are a few more details about how those things fit together. I have always been a teacher (my younger brother and a large stuffed mouse were my first students), a student of people and the human condition, and a believer in magic. When it came time to turn those things into a career, I decided, in the immortal words of Meatloaf (or just Loaf to his friends), that two out of three ain't bad and chose psychology. While I haven't always been able to incorporate magic into my career overtly, it was always there; I believe leading me to my dream job of coaching.

I've worked for small consulting firms, international consulting firms, and large global corporations. I've coached teenagers, stay at home moms, sales professionals, and big-time head honcho executives. I worked for a global hotel company for many years, which allowed me not only to coach some amazing people but also to travel and experience different cultures and ways of seeing the world while doing so. If you are a person who cares about education and letters behind names, I have a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and an MBA.

I began my coaching career working with executives and sales professionals seeking to enhance their performance. After years of hearing about missed opportunities and regrets, I became obsessed with finding ways to help people avoid the mistakes that seemed so common among my clients. In 2012, I founded Guidance for the Future to help young adults make wiser decisions as they were embarking on their "grown-up" lives. However, as I spoke to parents and described my work at cocktail parties, I was continually asked, "Could you do that for me?"

And I did.  I began working with adults and had the coolest, most amazing clients in the world.  In 2015, my family relocated, and the stress of a new city, a new school, new friends, new teachers, new everything eventually became overwhelming for one of my children.  Parenting an anxious child through some dark days, changed me as a person, a mother, and a coach. In 2020, I completed my first book, Stop Worrying About your Anxious Child, and shifted my focus to assisting parents who were struggling in ways I knew all too well.

Probably my most important roles are wife to an amazing, funny, smart and genuinely nice guy (I am often struck by how lucky I am that he chose to be with me) and mom to "Irish twins," a boy then a girl, with 16 months between them who could not be more different if they tried. I am also a fur momma to Astro, my rescue border collie-mix who manages to be insanely energetic and barky and territorial while also being utterly Zen about life and Bear, an incredibly active and affectionate Morkie Poo.

I am convinced that Astro came into my life to teach me how to be more like him. I've struggled with being a foul-mouthed, sarcastic, and irreverent lover of all things ridiculous while desperately wanting to be one of those calm "psychologist-types" with the yoga instructor voice who is never rattled by anything. Astro is trying to show me that I can find inner peace while still being myself.
